Neil 'Muppet' Davey – 450 games.
Every club would love to have a Neil 'Muppet' Davey as a part of their cricket club setting the fabric and culture for others play along side and enjoy. Tomorrow Muppet plays his 450th senior game which is a culmination of Bennettswood, East Burwood/Bennettswood, and East Burwood Cricket Clubs. At the young age of 63 it’s a long way from his start at Bennettswood in 1971 where he transferred from Mount Waverley junior cricket to start his senior cricket career. It was here that Muppet forged his way in a young developing club, quickly establishing himself as a leading batsman, captain coach, administrator and BHRDCA delegate. Muppet was a key figure in a dominant Bennettswood star studded team that rose through from B grade through to MacIntosh Shield. Muppet's never-give-in approach to batting saw him occupy the crease for long spells and score consistently, some say protecting the star batsmen to come at 4 and 5. He won countless batting awards as testament to his batting skill. In 1993/94 Muppet was an instrumental figure in the merger with East Burwood Cricket Club. At the time Muppet had been a coach of a combined BCC & EBCC junior team and this provided the link between the clubs as the process unfolded. There are players still at the club today who benefitted from Muppets coaching tutelage. At the newly combined East Burwood/Bennettswood Cricket Club Muppet duly assumed the role of 2nds captain and club secretary as is his way, always there to assume key roles. Here Muppet continued his run of premierships and playing awards. Just standard fair for Muppet. Muppet assumed the BHRDCA Treasurer role which he held for 9 years. During this time, he assisted in turning around the financial position of the competition which was duly recognised with the Tim Moore award for life membership. All along Muppet continued to mentor and support the younger generation club members through the committee, running of the club and in leadership roles. This timing coincided with the decision to return to the East Burwood Cricket Club name. Muppet continues to this day with his service and mentorship to our people, the club, and the association which he loves. Muppet has had his health battles through the journey none of which he has let get in the way of his mates or his club. Some call him grumpy, but it’s just because he cares, and he holds everyone to his high standards. Neil Muppet Davey, a credit to Bennettswood, East Burwood and BHRDCA. We are all fortunate to have him along side us. A great cricketer, competitor, coach and administrator, most of all a mate!
